The holiday season usually brings joy and excitement. But it can also bring an increased risk of suffering a severe personal injury. Here are three holiday-related accidents that we handle at our Omaha and Norfolk law firm, along with tips for avoiding them:
- Car accidents: Experts at AAA calculate that road trips will make up 96% of all year-end holiday travel in 2020. Between road congestion, poor weather conditions, and a seasonal uptick in drunk driving, it is a particularly dangerous time to be behind the wheel. Consider postponing unnecessary travel and stay vigilant when driving to lower your car accident
- Slips, trips, and falls: While slip and fall accidents occur year-round, they are the most prevalent during the winter. Negligent property owners often fail to clear away dangerous ice and snow and maintain clear sidewalks. Other conditions, such as poor lighting, unsafe stairways, and wet store floors, can also lead to serious personal injury. Wear shoes with good traction and be mindful of where you step.
- Defective toys and gifts: The National Safety Council reported that over a quarter of a million children suffered serious injuries in toy-related incidents in 2017. Some of those injuries can be traced back to dangerous defects present in the design of the toys. Defective toys may pose a choking, entrapment, or laceration hazard, as well as other risks of injury. Check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website to learn about holiday toy recalls.
